Former armed forces chief Hashim Ali dies at 90

His remains will be laid to rest with full military honours at the Raudhatul Sakinah Muslim cemetery.

Former defence forces chief Hashim Ali died at 11.50am today. He was 90.

In a Facebook post, the armed forces said Hashim died of a stroke at Gleneagles Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

It said his remains would be laid to rest with full military honours at the Raudhatul Sakinah Muslim cemetery in Sungai Besi.

Hashim, the younger brother of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s wife Dr Hasmah Ali, was a key figure at the signing of the Hat Yai Peace Accord on Dec 2, 1989.

Hashim was also the chairman of Sukom Ninety Eight Bhd, the company formed to manage the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.

After his retirement from the army, he chaired several public-listed companies.

Hashim was married to the late Majmin Yahya. He is survived by three children and five grandchildren.
