PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency foiled an attempt to bring in frozen meat and chicken without permits worth about RM1.3 million from Sept 17 to 24.

The agency said three containers containing meat without Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) import permits and health certificates were seized during separate inspections at the Pasir Gudang port.

“The first container seized on Sept 17 contained 27,816kg of frozen pork from the US, Poland and Vietnam with an estimated value of RM898,919,” Bernama reported it as saying.

On Sept 18 and Sept 24, the agency seized containers carrying 26,856kg and 26,136kg of frozen chicken from Thailand worth RM228,276 and RM222,156, respectively.

It said importing any type of agricultural product without a Maqis import permit is an offence under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, punishable under Section 11(3) of the same Act.

If convicted, offenders may be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed not more than six years, or both.
