PETALING JAYA:
A man arrested after a 60km chase with police which saw gunshots fired and an attempt to ram officers in Behrang, Perak, pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder.

Kosmo reported that Ameerul Asraf Saipul, 35, entered his plea after the charge was read in the Teluk Intan sessions court before judge Norhimizah Shaiffuddin.

The father of five was charged with the attempted murder of Azizul Yahya, Lokman Nulhakim Mahdir, S Muniya Kaunden and Noor Azam Man.

The offence was allegedly committed near the petrol station at the Behrang rest stop southbound on the North-South Expressway at 11am on Sept 20.

Ameerul was charged under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years’ imprisonment upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Izzuddin Fakri Hamdan offered no bail given the seriousness of the charge.

However, lawyer Nur Shaqira Ibrahim requested bail, saying Ameerul was his family’s breadwinner and had five children aged two to nine years old.

The court set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered Ameerul to report to a nearby police station once a month.
