National mixed doubles shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai booked a quarter-final berth at the Korea Open today after defeating China’s Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying in straight games.

The married couple, who are ranked world No 8, were in total control of the match, winning 21-16, 21-13 against the 25th ranked pair in just 31 minutes at the Suwon Gymnasium.

In the quarter-finals, they are likely to meet world No 1 pair Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin, who are expected to get past the new Japanese combination of Yuta Watanabe- Maya Taguchi.

Soon Huat-Shevon have been having a disappointing run this season as they have yet to enter a final, with several early exits.

It was double joy in the mixed doubles with unheralded Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien showing superb fighting spirit to come from a game down, defeating home pair Lee Jong Min-Chae Yoo Jung in three games.

The Malaysians trailed 7-12 in the decider before storming back to win 21-9, 15-21, 21-17 in a match lasting 51 minutes.

They will meet either Danish pair Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje or Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu of Indonesia in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
