PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan has confirmed that statutory declarations (SDs) were collected from division chiefs ahead of the party’s annual general meeting on Sept 9.

However, the Tasek Gelugor MP said the move had been “twisted” by certain quarters to smear its true intention.

“The SD collection is true, but certain quarters twisted the story about its true intention,” he told FMT.

Wan Saiful said he was scheduled to meet Bersatu’s disciplinary board at noon today to explain the matter.

However, he said the meeting has been postponed to a later date.

“My intention is to meet the board because I want to know who twisted the narrative that the SDs were aimed at toppling the party president (Muhyiddin Yassin).

“Because that was not the intention behind the SDs,” he said.

A viral WhatsApp message had claimed that Wan Saiful has been summoned to appear before Bersatu’s disciplinary board today under Article 23 of the party’s constitution for allegedly organising the collection of SDs to push for Muhyiddin’s deputy, Hamzah Zainudin, to take over the party leadership.

It was reported that just a few hours before Muhyiddin’s keynote speech at the party’s annual general assembly (AGM), 122 of 169 division chiefs broke ranks to have lunch 5km away from the Ideal Convention Centre where the assembly was held.

Muhyiddin later acknowledged during his policy speech at the AGM that there was a plot to collect signatures to oust him, sparking chaos.

However, the AGM concluded with Muhyiddin’s position secured after delegates unanimously endorsed him as Bersatu’s prime minister candidate.
