Penang island mayor A Rajendran said repairs were completed by 4am, allowing the main route to be fully reopened to the public.
“The road is now fully open and safe for use,” he said in a statement today.
IWK had confirmed that the incident was caused by the collapse of a sewer pipe due to a shift in the pipe connection, which can happen suddenly under heavy loads, rather than ageing infrastructure as previously suggested.
It also said that the 525mm diameter pipe believed to be the main cause of the cave-in was actually located upstream of the area.
Rajendran said the damaged sewer pipe had been fully replaced and that a new manhole cover was installed early Wednesday morning.
