Penang fire and rescue department assistant director of operations and rescue John Sagun Francis said an emergency call was received at 6.39am.

A team of seven firefighters and three fire engines was rushed to the scene.

“The blaze involved a pile of waste at the landfill, covering an estimated area of 100×50 sq m,” he said in a statement today.

He said firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze, and that updates would be issued from time to time.
