State executive councillor A Sivanesan said the proposal focuses on restricting the issuance of vape sales licences by local authorities.

“We are only banning the sale of vape because licences are issued by local authorities, which fall under our jurisdiction. Personally, I hope it will be approved,” he told Utusan Malaysia.

Sivanesan said the move was a preventive measure to protect public health, especially the younger generation.

He said the policy, if adopted, would make Perak the fifth state to announce bans on the sale of vape products this year after Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah and Pahang.

Johor and Kelantan imposed bans in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said last week his ministry is drafting a Cabinet memorandum on a proposed vape ban at the federal level.
