Commenting on the stand-off that took place between the authorities and some of the people being evicted, city police chief Fadil Marsus maintained that they were merely carrying out the court’s orders.
“The police and other relevant agencies were acting as enforcement authorities to ensure the eviction process was carried out smoothly.
“Despite the challenges that have come up, the eviction will go ahead today in line with the court order,” he said, according to Berita Harian.
Fadil said he regretted the incident that left Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman with a bloodied face after being struck with an object, believed to have been thrown by a person.
“Such incidents should never happen. We will not compromise in this matter.
“Police will be firm and disciplined throughout our operations. I urge residents to cooperate with us to ensure the eviction process is completed today.”
Sulizmie was hurt amid a stand-off with residents, leaving him with a bleeding wound on his head.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail have condemned the incident, with the former ordering an immediate investigation to be held to arrest those involved.
The redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru was initiated in 2016 but had stalled due to legal issues, compensation disputes and disagreements among residents.
