PETALING JAYA:
A total of 41 out of 60 investigation papers opened on criminal cases involving politicians between 2020 and July have been classified as no further action (NFA).

Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said told the Dewan Negara that the cases could be reopened if new developments surfaced.

“Unlike civil cases, there is no statute of limitations for criminal cases,” she said in a written reply.

Azalina also said the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) does not take into account the background of the individuals investigated, and thoroughly reviews all evidence submitted in investigation papers by the police.

“The AGC’s assessment is based on facts, evidence, and applicable laws, taking into account the principles of integrity, transparency, and prosecutorial independence,” she said.

Azalina was responding to a question from Senator Hussin Ismail, who had asked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to state the percentage of criminal cases involving politicians that were classified as NFA between 2020 and 2025.

Hussin had also asked about the mechanisms in place to ensure that political interference plays no role in the classification of cases as NFA.
