2.14mil migrant workers in Malaysia, says HR ministry

They come from 15 source countries, the majority of them from Bangladesh.

Human resources minister Steven Sim said the 2.14 million workers come from 15 source countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Myanmar and India.

There are over 2.14 million foreign workers currently working in Malaysia, says human resources minister Steven Sim.

Sim said these workers come from 15 source countries:

  1. Bangladesh – 803,322
  2. Indonesia – 543,514
  3. Nepal – 332,712
  4. Myanmar – 173,630
  5. India – 106,929
  6. Pakistan – 76,011
  7. Philippines – 52,340
  8. Thailand – 21,822
  9. Vietnam – 16,614
  10. Sri Lanka – 5,938
  11. Cambodia – 5,655
  12. China – 4,796
  13. Laos- 1,491
  14. Uzbekistan – 12
  15. Kazakhstan – 3

Sim was replying to Ismail Abdul Muttalib (PN-Maran), who had asked about the number of foreign workers and undocumented migrants in the country.

In a written parliamentary reply, the minister also directed the query on the number of undocumented migrants to the immigration department.
