National doubles shuttlers Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King stormed into the last 16 of the World Badminton Championships in Paris by defeating top Thai pair Kittinupong Kedren-Dechapol Puavaranukroh in straight games.

The Malaysian world No 22 pair showed power and accuracy to win 21-13, 21-17, showing that clinching the Macau Open earlier this month was no fluke.

Despite trailing 10-14 in the second game after winning the first, Wan Arif-Roy King prevailed in the match that lasted only 33 minutes.

It was the first time that the two pairs had played against each other.

In another match, mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin were stretched to three games by Germany’s Malik Bourakkadi-Leona Michalski before winning 21-10, 18-21, 21-12 in 45 minutes.

In the last 16, they will face compatriots Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, who beat Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Phataimas Muenwong 21-19, 21-15 in another round of 32 match.

In the second round of the women’s singles, K Letshanaa fell to former world champion PV Sindhu from India 19-21,15-21.

Letshanaa, who had a great opening round yesterday, gave Sindhu a scare in the first game by leading 18-12, but the experienced Indian shuttler remained calm to prevail in the end.

Women’s doubles pair Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing’s World Championship debut came to an abrupt end when they lost to Bulgarian sisters Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva 11-21, 9-21 in 34 minutes.
