Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said Anwar raised the matter at today’s Cabinet meeting after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission detained five senior officers, including the two from MDIO, and five civilians in an operation.
“The defence ministry will provide a full report to the Cabinet after MACC completes its investigation,” Fahmi said at his weekly post-Cabinet press conference in Putrajaya today.
“Once MACC has conducted its probe, the military will also carry out its own investigation. So, we will wait for that.”
Fahmi said Anwar also asked defence minister Khaled Nordin to brief the Cabinet on last night’s FA-18D Hornet fighter jet crash in Kuantan, Pahang.
“The minister informed us that both pilots are safe and that an investigation is being carried out. The findings will be presented to the Cabinet once completed.
“Since this is a different investigation from the one conducted by MACC, it cannot be interfered with and must continue,” he said.
He said Anwar also asked the defence ministry to ensure national security is not compromised.
‘Allow assemblies in front of Parliament to continue’
Fahmi said Anwar had maintained that assemblies in front of Parliament should not be prohibited, even though the nearby Padang Merbok has been gazetted as a designated assembly site.
“What is required is that access routes are kept under control to avoid any delays for MPs and others entering or leaving Parliament.
“At the same time, the prime minister has directed the federal territories minister (Dr Zaliha Mustafa) to review the fencing around Padang Merbok and make improvements so that the public can use the field more effectively,” he said.
More time needed on anti-bullying tribunal
On the proposed anti-bullying tribunal, Fahmi said law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said had requested more time to prepare documents before tabling the matter again in the Cabinet.
He also said the Cabinet discussed bullying in schools and higher learning institutions, and stressed the need for coordination among the education and defence ministries, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), the Attorney-General’s Chambers, police, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
