PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham is expected to be charged at the magistrates’ court in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow over a speech he delivered during a gathering outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters last month.

The wing’s information chief Harris Idaham Rashid said Hilman would be charged under the Penal Code at 9am with making statements conducing to public mischief.

“The Bersatu youth wing strongly condemns this action, which is clearly an act of political intimidation aimed at silencing the opposition,” Harris said in a statement.

Based on a poster circulated on social media, a gathering is expected to be held in solidarity with Hilman at 8am tomorrow outside the Kuala Lumpur court complex.

Hilman, when addressing the crowd at the July 29 gathering outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters, had slammed the arrests of several party members, believed to be in connection with the Turun Anwar rally on July 26.

Describing the arrests as unnecessary, Hilman said the police only needed to summon them if their statements were required.

He also said the more people arrested over the Turun Anwar rally, “the faster the government would fall”.

Police had arrested Bersatu leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin and Sijangkang PAS Youth chief Ikhwan Syaffiq on July 28.

The following day, Furqan Hakimi, who serves as the executive secretary of Bersatu Youth’s Perak chapter, and party member Syafiq Aziz were also arrested.

All four were released the day after their arrests after the remand applications were rejected.

Badrul had earlier said he was probed under the Sedition Act, the Communications and Multimedia Act, the Penal Code, and the Minor Offences Act.
