The retired school clerk is accused of raping the girl, who was nine at the time, at a house in Permatang Kerai Besar, Kepala Batas.
The 67-year old, a father of four, made the plea after the charge was read out to him before judge Nor Azah Kasran at the Butterworth sessions court, reported Harian Metro.
The charge was framed under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of not less than 10 years and not more than 30 years, and whipping, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Rifaie Riyaludin prosecuted, while Sabri was represented by lawyers Yazid Khairul Azman and Ismat Arif Abu Hassan.
The prosecution did not offer bail, citing the accused’s relationship with the victim and their close proximity, which could pose a risk of intimidating the victim.
However, the defence lawyers requested bail for the former school clerk, stating that he has health problems, requires regular hospital treatment, and has a hearing impairment.
Bail was allowed at RM12,000 with one surety.
He was also ordered to report to the nearest police station every month and not to disturb the victim or any prosecution witnesses until the case is concluded.
The case will be mentioned again on Sept 24 for a medical report.
