MCMC said it would conduct a public consultation on the proposed framework from Aug 13 to 5.30pm on Aug 27, inviting feedback from industry players, civil society, consumer groups, lawmakers, and the public.
In a statement, it said the framework is being devised following amendments to Section 233A of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which concerns the improper use of network facilities.
“The proposed framework aims to strengthen consumer protection, promote responsible digital marketing practices, and foster a safer and more trustworthy digital ecosystem.
“In line with this new provision, MCMC is developing subsidiary legislation to establish a clear, coherent, and enforceable structure to address the increasing prevalence of UCEM,” it said.
