PETALING JAYA:
Police have confirmed signs of abuse in the death of a 23-month-old boy at Kampung Banggol in Manir, Kuala Terengganu last Saturday.

Terengganu police chief Khairi Khairuddin said a post-mortem revealed bleeding in the head and bruises all over the body, Bernama reported.

He said the suspects – the boy’s biological father and stepmother – have given their statements, as well as a doctor and a nurse from Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.

Khairi said the incident allegedly occurred inside the home, when only the victim, the suspects and the victim’s three-year-old brother were present.

He said police are awaiting the full medical report before submitting the investigation paper to the deputy public prosecutor.

He also said a check on the victim’s brother, now under the social welfare department’s care, found no signs of abuse.

Police have remanded the father, 27, and stepmother, 30, for seven days under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment or exposure of children.
