KUALA LUMPUR:
More than 2,000 participants turned up at Dataran Merdeka for a pro-Palestinian rally as of 5pm, with the number of attendees expected to rise later tonight.

The rally, organised by the Secretariat Humanity 4 Gaza (H4G) and the Malaysian Ulama Association, is scheduled to end at 11pm.

It will feature a poetry recital, a forum, and a special live screening from Gaza.

Yesterday, Dang Wangi police said they expected a crowd of 5,000.

People turned up as early as 3.30pm and congregated at Masjid Negara and the Sogo shopping complex before marching to Dataran Merdeka.

Many of those who turned up were spotted waving Palestinian flags in solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Some were also heard chanting “Free Palestine” and calling for Israel’s destruction. Others were seen carrying placards with slogans such as “Palestine will be free”.

The war in Gaza, that started after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct 7, 2023, has killed over 60,000 Palestinians following retaliatory strikes by Tel Aviv.
