PETALING JAYA:
MCA president Wee Ka Siong has hit back at an MP from DAP after the latter cynically suggested that he join the opposition, labelling such remarks as childish.

Kampar MP Chong Zhemin had yesterday remarked that the Ayer Hitam MP should join PAS because he was constantly looking at the opposition bloc when debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Citing the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, Chong said MPs were supposed to address the Speaker presiding over the proceedings rather than any bloc in the House.

Wee, however, said that it only seemed he was “constantly” facing the opposition bloc because of where he was seated in the Dewan Rakyat.

The opposition bloc just happened to be in his line of sight, Wee said.

“Even when I look at the Speaker it will seem like I am looking at the opposition,” he told FMT.

Wee said it would be a different matter altogether if he was seated right in the centre.

“But I don’t get to choose where I sit. So it is unfair for Chong to make such claims,” he told FMT.

Wee also said that throughout the debate he was looking at his speech text and turned “neither left or right” when delivering his speech.

Chong’s sarcastic jibe follows reports that both MCA and MIC are reportedly weighing their future in the unity government as well as in Barisan Nasional due to their lack of a role in the federal administration.

PAS has expressed willingness to work with both parties under Perikatan Nasional, with its spiritual leader, Hashim Jasin, saying the Islamic party had no issue working with any party except DAP.

Wee went on to take Chong to task for making such remarks and trivialising the sitting.

“He should just stick to debating the 13MP instead of making snide remarks and making a mountain out of a molehill.”
