PETALING JAYA:
A married couple has been arrested and remanded for seven days to assist in investigations into the death of a seven-month-old baby girl at a condominium in Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Cheras, last night.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the pair, aged 38 and 50, are the adoptive parents of the child.

He said the couple are on remand until Aug 6 and that investigations were opened under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which deals with ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment or exposure to physical or emotional injury, Berita Harian reported.

Usuf said they found that the baby’s biological mother is an Indonesian national.

“The suspects claimed the woman had given up the baby girl before returning to her home country on June 18,” he said in a statement.

He added that police were awaiting the results of the post-mortem at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz.

Usuf was earlier reported as saying that the baby was found dead last night with bruises all over her body.

Police received a report at about 9.34pm from the child’s adopted father, who said the baby had lost consciousness.
