KUALA LUMPUR:
A trader has been fined a total of RM300,000 by the sessions court here after pleading guilty to possessing parts from a range of endangered and critically endangered animal species.

Judge Zaki Salleh meted out the sentence on Yiu Shoou Rang after he pleaded guilty to 13 charges under Section 60(1)(b) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

Yiu will be liable to serve between one and three months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

Among the illicitly kept animal parts were those belonging to species such as the sun bear, helmeted hornbill, orangutan, Sambar deer, great argus pheasant, saltwater crocodile, and banteng, all listed under various threatened categories.

Authorities also found remains from wild boars, hedgehogs, butterflies, and other protected fauna.

The offence was committed at Central Market here on Jan 8, 2024.

Yiu was sentenced after the judge heard an application from the defence for a plea bargain. The application and the plea in mitigation were heard in chambers.
