Aaron-Wooi Yik beat Wei Chong-Kai Wun to enter China Open semis

The top Malaysian men’s doubles pair defeated their lower-ranked compatriots in straight games.

National men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik marched into the semi-finals of the China Open after beating compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in straight games today.

The world No 2 pair took just 33 minutes to wrap up the match, winning 21-16, 21-16 against their seventh ranked rivals. With this, Aaron-Wooi Yik have now won four of their seven encounters against their countrymen.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will meet Satwiksairaj Renkireddy-Chiraq Shetty in the semi-finals after the Indian pair beat Malaysians Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 18-21, 14-21.

The Indians have now defeated Yew Sin-Ee Yi seven times in their 11 outings so far.

The victory by Aaron-Wooi Yik is significant as it is their first semi-final at a World Super 1000 event this year.

They are gunning for a fourth title this year after winning the Thailand Open, Singapore Open and the Badminton Asia Championships. However, they were knocked out in the first round of the Japan Open last week.

Both Wei Chong-Kai Wun and Yew Sin-Ee Yi won US$12,500 (RM52,700) for reaching the quarter-finals.

The tournament offers a total prize money of US$2 million (RM8.4 million), with winners in the doubles events taking home US$148,000 (RM624,000) and the runners-up US$70,000 (RM295,146). The losing semi-finalists will each get US$28,000 (RM118,000).
