PETALING JAYA:
National men’s doubles shuttlers Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong caused another major upset at the Japan Open when they knocked out former world champions Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen to book a quarter-final berth.

Displaying superb fighting spirit, the world No 23 pair took more than an hour to win the hard-fought, three-game battle against the world No 4 Danes with a score of 21-16, 15-21, 21-19.

This is Azriyn-Wee Kiong’s first encounter with the Danish pair.

The Malaysian pair will take on the winners of the match between China’s Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi and Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han from Taiwan in the quarter-finals tomorrow.

Yesterday, Azriyn-Wee Kiong shocked world No 18 French pair Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov in a hard-fought three-game encounter. They came from behind to win 13-21, 21-17, 21-19 in a match that lasted 58 minutes.

Another Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, also qualified for the quarter-finals this evening, a first in their career.

The pair, who are ranked world No 30 in the men’s doubles, defeated US duo Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith in three games.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi took 55 minutes to win 19-21, 21-14, 21-19 in the second round match played at the Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo.

This was their first encounter with the US pair, who are ranked one position below.

Today’s win comes a day after they sent compatriots and world No 2 men’s pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik packing in the opening round.

However, Yew Sin-Ee Yi will have a tough hurdle to clear in the quarter-finals as they will take on the world No 6 pair from China, Liang We Keng-Wang Chang.

Other Malaysians playing later are men’s doubles pairs Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah.
