PETALING JAYA:
A convoy of motor vehicles will be held by activists to celebrate Sarawak’s independence from colonial rule despite the cancellation of an “independence day” rally, slated to be held on July 22 in Kuching.

The 722 rally was to celebrate July 22 as Sarawak’s day of independence. Rally organisers called it off after the Kuching South City Council banned the planned release of pigeons and the use of all motor vehicles. The organisers had planned to hold a parade of vintage cars as part of the rally.

Instead, a newly formed association will hold the “2025 Pan Sarawak Independence Day Convoy” on July 18-21 along the Pan Borneo Highway, according to Dayak Daily.

Organiser Yeo Yaw Lee urged participants to stay committed to the journey and not be discouraged by the cancellation of the rally.

He said the convoy’s focus was not on public gatherings but on the convoy’s symbolic journey across Sarawak to “educate the public on the state’s historical status, advocate for Sarawak’s rightful interests, and address policy imbalances that have long affected the region.”
