PETALING JAYA:
A lecturer was fined RM150 by the Balik Pulau magistrates’ court in Penang today after pleading guilty to injuring her husband with a bamboo stick during a domestic dispute last week.

Yang Khalida Khalid, 37, admitted to assaulting her husband, Nasir Abdul Halim, 48, outside their home at Taman Emas, Teluk Kumbar, at about 11am on July 4, Harian Metro reported.

The charge sheet said she struck her husband on the head and arm in anger, causing injuries including scratches on his cheek and swelling on his left wrist.

She was charged under Section 334 of the Penal Code with voluntarily causing hurt on provocation, which carries a penalty of up to one month’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate Chia Huey Ting ordered Yang Khalida to serve three days in jail if she failed to pay the fine. She settled the amount.

During the proceedings, deputy public prosecutor R Lushani called for an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent.

Yang Khalida’s lawyer, Yiew De Xian from the National Legal Aid Foundation, pleaded for leniency, saying the couple is undergoing divorce proceedings, and that she earns RM2,000 a month and supports her mother.
