Suspected salmonella outbreak hits Kelantan college, hundreds report sick

PETALING JAYA:
A total of 343 individuals, including new students, committee members and staff of a private college in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, are suspected to have suffered food poisoning today.

State health department director Dr Zaini Hussin said the salmonella bacteria is suspected to be the cause of the outbreak.

“The main symptoms experienced were abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and fever,” he said, according to Berita Harian.

Zaini said the suspected source of the outbreak was the chicken curry, believed to have been prepared by an external caterer.

He said 134 individuals had sought medical treatment on their own, while 209 cases were identified by health personnel through active case detection.
