Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail said the 37-year-old victim was reportedly a close friend of the son, and that the murder might have been related to a debt.
In a statement, Azam said police received a report from an assistant medical officer on June 22 about a death at a house in Taman Pandan Perdana. The victim was confirmed dead at the scene.
A post-mortem at Ampang Hospital revealed signs of foul play, with the cause of death identified as a bacterial infection resulting from skin and bone injuries.
The arrests were made on June 26 and June 28. The 73-year-old man was remanded for 13 days while his 36-year-old son was remanded for 14 days.
Police also seized a bamboo cane and a pair of adjustable pliers believed to be linked to the case.
Both suspects tested negative for drugs and have no criminal records.
The case is being investigated for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
