WSIS+20 will take place in Geneva, Switzerland from July 7 to July 11.
The ministry said Malaysia’s participation in the event would bring about numerous strategic benefits, including global recognition of Malaysia’s push for wider internet access in rural areas as well as efforts to boost information and communication technology literacy among the public.
“Malaysia will use WSIS to introduce government initiatives like the National Digital Network (Jendela) and the national information dissemination centre (Nadi),” a ministry statement said.
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil will be leading the Malaysian delegation to WSIS+20, and will attend more than 10 meetings with his counterparts from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Somalia, Greece, Russia and Algeria.
Fahmi will also be meeting Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union.
