
He said they had signed a letter of undertaking to remain in Iran despite the government’s earlier call for all Malaysians to leave the country amid the escalating conflict in the region, Bernama reported.
“The evacuation process for Malaysians in Iran was completed on June 21. However, four students – three in Qom and one in Esfahan – decided to remain, along with a businessman.
“They agreed to sign a letter of undertaking, stating that they wanted to remain (in Iran for now). They also expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra for the help rendered,” he told reporters after an event here today.
Twenty-four individuals who were evacuated from Iran returned safely home on June 22.
The group comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens and one Singaporean national.
Malaysia’s ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, who led the group, told the media they had to travel about 1,000km by land to exit Tehran.
