PETALING JAYA:
The University of Cyberjaya has pledged to tighten safety protocols on campus and at its residential facilities after the death of a student in a shared condominium unit provided by the institution.

In a statement today, the university expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the student’s family and members of the university community.

“The safety of our students, their families and the surrounding community remains our utmost priority.

“In addition to existing measures, we are working closely with security experts to further strengthen our safety procedures,” it said.

The university also said it is fully cooperating with the authorities to ensure a thorough and timely probe.

It also urged the public and media to respect the family’s privacy and refrain from speculation or sharing unverified information.

“We will continue to provide regular updates as appropriate and are committed to supporting our community throughout this period,” it added.

Twenty-year-old Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, who hailed from Kuching, Sarawak, was discovered in her Mutiara Ville condominium unit with injuries on her body by a friend on Tuesday.

She was said to be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy and had been sharing the unit with five other students who had returned to their hometowns for the holidays on June 21.

Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman said a murder investigation had been opened after a report was received at 10.28am.

An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head. There were no injuries consistent with rape.
