PETALING JAYA:
The Seremban magistrates’ court sentenced a man to one month in jail after he pleaded guilty to causing a fatal accident last year by riding his bicycle in a reckless manner.

Magistrate Nurul Azuin Talhah ordered K Selva Natchathiram, 56, to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest on May 29, Sinar Harian reported.

Selva was charged with riding his bicycle without due care and attention, leading to an accident in front of a supermarket in Taman Desa Anggerik, Seremban, at about 2.55pm on March 27, 2024.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of a fine of RM1,000-RM5,000 or a jail term of up to 12 months.

The accused, who was unrepresented, asked to be jailed instead of fined, saying he worked as a security guard and could not afford the penalty.

Deputy public prosecutor P Rubini urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.

According to the case facts, the cyclist travelling from Ampangan to Senawang was making a right turn at a junction when he crashed into a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

The motorcyclist, aged 28, died at the scene from head injuries.
