Mahfuz said the development in the Iran-Israel war was becoming worrying and ran the risk of jeopardising global and Southeast Asia’s regional stability.

“I call on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to immediately consider the need for this special sitting in the interest of justice, humanity, and sovereignty,” he said in a statement today.

The former Pokok Sena MP said the Dewan Rakyat should discuss Malaysia’s official stance on the conflict and appropriate diplomatic action to be taken; the conflict’s geopolitical and economic impact on the country’s supply chain, oil prices, and security; and humanitarian action Malaysia can take to assist Iranian victims of war.

“As the highest democratic institution in the country, Parliament cannot remain silent on matters concerning global justice, the sovereignty of other nations, and humanitarian principles,” he said.

“The voice of the Malaysian people must be expressed through legitimate and dignified channels, namely, the Dewan Rakyat.”

Mahfuz said Malaysia must also continue to reject all forms of colonialism, aggression, and violations of international laws through organisations such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Non-Aligned Movement, and Asean.

Earlier today, President Donald Trump said the US military had carried out a “very successful attack” on three Iranian nuclear sites, including the underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordo.

Trump’s announcement came just two days after he said he would decide “within two weeks” whether to join key ally Israel in attacking Iran.
