Bangladeshi worker charged with reckless driving, causing pedestrian’s death

KUALA LUMPUR:
A construction worker has pleaded not guilty to driving recklessly and causing the death of a pedestrian last week.

Atique Zaman, a Bangladeshi national, was slapped with the charge under Section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The charge sheet states that on June 13, the accused was driving a black Nissan from Sentul towards Jinjang when he allegedly struck pedestrian Muhammad Rezuan Jamal along Jalan Ipoh.

If found guilty, Atique faces a maximum fine of RM20,000 and a jail term of more than five years.

The charge was read to him in Bengali by an interpreter.

Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni granted Atique bail of RM20,000 with two sureties and ordered him to surrender his passport pending the disposal of his case.

The court also suspended his driving licence.

The case will be mentioned in court again on Aug 11.

Atique was represented by lawyer Muhammad Affendy Yusop while deputy public prosecutor Adiba Iman Hassan appeared for the prosecution.
