PETALING JAYA:
A holiday back in their hometown ended in tragedy when two siblings drowned while swimming at the Pulau Mentigi beach near Mersing this afternoon.

Mersing zone director for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Suhaizan Saadin identified them as Nur Awatif Udaima Hisam, 15, and her brother, Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni, 13.

He said MMEA was alerted of the incident at 4.25pm and launched a search-and-rescue operation.

MMEA’s patrol boat Perkasa 44 was deployed to the scene, Bernama reported.

Awatif’s body was found by residents at 4.30pm, and her brother’s body was found two hours later.

Suhaizan said the victims’ family had returned to their village at Pulau Tinggi for the school holidays. They had gone to the beach, 19 nautical miles from the Mersing coastline, for an outing.
