PETALING JAYA:
The hacker who gained access to the WhatsApp account of home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is believed to have used a virtual private network (VPN) application, according to the police.

Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department acting director Hasbullah Ali said this was based on preliminary investigations following a police report lodged over the incident, Harian Metro reported.

“The hacker breached the minister’s WhatsApp account and sent a URL link to his contacts through the app,” he was quoted as saying.

“So far, no one has reported any losses. The swift action by the minister’s aides, who quickly alerted the authorities, helped prevent anyone from being deceived.”

He said police are currently tracking the hacker’s location and that an investigation paper has been opened under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997.

On Monday, it was revealed that Saifuddin’s WhatsApp account had been hacked.

His office reminded the public to be wary of calls or messages from those claiming to be Saifuddin, especially if it involves money or to set up a meeting.
