Aaron-Wooi Yik clear first round at Singapore Open

The Malaysian world No 3 pair took 44 minutes to beat Danish pair Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard in straight games.

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik progressed to the second round of the Singapore Open today by defeating Danish pair Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard in straight games.

In a match similar to their quarter-final encounter at the Malaysia Masters last week, the Malaysian world No 3 duo took 44 minutes to beat the Danish pair 21-19, 24-22.

The Danes had game point five times in the second game, but Aaron-Wooi Yik caught up to knock their rivals out of the World Tour 750 series.

Fellow Malaysians Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King also advanced to the second round after beating Adam Eloi-Leo Rossi from France 21-13, 21-18 in 36 minutes.

Malaysia’s top mixed doubles pair of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai will also feature in the last 16 tomorrow after clearing their first round match yesterday.

Reunited world No 4 pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who tried out new partners at their last two tournaments, defeated their US opponents Presley Smith-Jennie Gai in straight games of 21-18, 21-15.

However, national men’s doubles pair Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri were shown the exit in the opening round after being beaten 21-16, 21-13 by India’s former world No 1 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty.

Men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao broke his streak of first round defeats in his last five outings by qualifying for  last 16, thanks to a walkover from China’s Lei Lan Xi.
