“As deputy president, I hope to focus (on) stressing and expanding the scope of reforms as much as we can within the party’s ambit,” she told reporters after a PKR campaign event tonight, without detailing a full reform agenda.
Nurul Izzah, who is challenging incumbent Rafizi Ramli for the post, was responding to a question about the recent extension of Azam Baki’s contract as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief.
Asked whether she planned to raise the matter with party president Anwar Ibrahim, she replied: “As I said, within the scope of the party.”
In a post on X last Saturday, Nurul Izzah had described Azam’s contract extension as “unwelcome”.
She said PKR must remain steadfast in its commitment to reforms and called for the public and party members to lend their support.
“We ask brave and courageous civil servants and personalities to rise to the occasion,” she said.
Azam’s contract extension was announced on May 9 by the government. His new one-year term began on May 13.
His contract had been extended twice since he took office in March 2020 following the resignation of Latheefa Koya, after the fall of the former Pakatan Harapan government.
When the unity coalition government was formed in December 2022, Anwar defended his decision not to replace Azam, saying he wanted to break the convention that a change of guard in the agency was necessary whenever a new prime minister was appointed.
