This is based on checks on PKR’s election website.
Numerous top and divisional leaders had expressed their support for her bid for the number two position, which was won by Rafizi Ramli in 2022 after defeating former PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Supporters include vice-president Amirudin Shari, Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek, youth wing chief Adam Adli, and Shamsul Iskandar Akin, the senior political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The wave of support for Nurul Izzah came in the wake of Rafizi’s leave of absence following the PKR divisional polls, which saw the defeat of several key figures aligned with him.
Rafizi has confirmed that he will defend his position as PKR deputy president, while Nurul Izzah earlier said she would make “the best decision possible”.
She was appointed as a PKR vice-president in 2022 after opting not to contest the central leadership elections that year.
Nurul Izzah served as the Lembah Pantai MP from 2008 to 2018 and was the Permatang Pauh MP from 2018 to 2022. She lost the seat in the last general election (GE15) to PAS’s Fawwaz Jan.
The battle for the deputy president’s post looks poised to be a three-way contest among Nurul Izzah, Rafizi and Saifuddin.
However, neither Rafizi nor Saifuddin have officially registered as contestants.
Anwar officially registers to defend PKR president’s post
Anwar has officially submitted his nomination to defend his position as PKR president.
As of 4.15pm, only Anwar’s name was registered as a contestant for the top post, according to PKR’s election website.
Anwar, who has led PKR since 2018, is widely expected to retain his position unchallenged – although the final list of contenders will only be confirmed after the objection period closes.
Meanwhile, the race for the four vice-president’s posts is heating up, with 11 candidates having submitted their nominations so far.
The incumbents – Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang – will all be seeking re-election.
They will face competition from several other notable figures, including Sungai Buloh MP and deputy entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister R Ramanan, former Selangor executive councillor Hee Loy Sian, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran, former PKR vice-president Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, and Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.
Also joining the fray are senator Abun Sui Anyit and deputy secretary-general Dr N Sathia Prakash.
The nominations for the central leadership elections opened yesterday and will close at 11.59pm today.
