PETALING JAYA:
The body of a Malaysian mountain climber has been found in an 80-metre-deep ravine on the side of the Indonesian volcano Mount Rinjani in Lombok island, according to part authorities.

The climber, identified by the initials RAG, was part of a group of 23 climbers. In a report from Shah Alam, Sinar Harian named him as Rennie Abdul Ghani, 57, brother-in-law of local actor Riezman Khuzaimi

According to information from the guide and the victim’s companions in Rinjani park, Rennie had gone ahead after the group stopped at 11am to collect drinking water at a spring, Bernama reported.

“He continued walking and did not stop to rest,” the park authorities said.

The group leader then followed him along a section of the trail equipped with a safety rope, but the victim refused to use it. While descending, the victim let go of the rope and lost his footing, and fell to the right side of the trail,” the park statement said.

Rennie had begun the ascent of the mountain with the group on May 1.

Mount Rinjani, which stands 3,726m high, is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and dominates the landscape of the relatively small island of Lombok. It contains a huge 50 sq km caldera in which sits the crater lake Segara Anak
