PETALING JAYA:
A man is believed to have drowned after falling from a boat while gathering cockles at Km4.2 of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (Penang second bridge) this morning.

Penang fire and rescue department director Shoki Hamzah said the victim was identified as Ismail Ahmad, 28.

He said six personnel from the Batu Kawan fire and rescue station were still looking for the man, Bernama reported.

Shoki said fishermen and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency personnel were helping in the search and rescue operation.

The department was alerted about the incident at about 10.40am.

Shoki said the boat was believed to have hit pole number 274 on the second bridge, causing the operator to fall into the sea.

The victim’s father and friend were in another boat at the same location at the time, he said.
