PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from a man suspected of uploading fake content related to the Pahang government on Facebook.

MCMC said the content, uploaded on April 19, was allegedly generated using artificial intelligence (AI). It was said to have triggered public speculation and negative perceptions among the public, particularly on the issue of illegal farmers in Raub.

MCMC said the man’s statement was recorded yesterday at the Ampang Jaya police headquarters.

“A mobile phone and a SIM card were seized for forensic analysis,” it said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of up to RM500,000, a maximum jail term of two years, or both upon conviction.

MCMC warned that it would not tolerate the misuse of social media to spread disinformation.

“Firm action will be taken against the individuals involved,” it said.
