PETALING JAYA:
Police have arrested eight people following a viral video showing a man being assaulted by a group in an apartment unit in Johor.

Seri Alam police chief Sohaimi Ishak said the victim had gone to the apartment after being invited by a woman he met through social media but upon arrival, he was not allowed to leave and was assaulted by a group of eight men.

He said seven men and a woman, aged between 19 and 26, had been arrested over the incident at 2.30am yesterday. Five of them have prior criminal records, including for drug-related cases.

“Initial urine tests showed four of them tested positive for methamphetamine,” he said, adding that all detainees would be remanded until April 26.

The two-minute video, which has been widely shared on Facebook, showed the man being repeatedly punched and kicked.

The incident, which took place on April 18 at about 9.30pm in an apartment at Pangsapuri Plentong Baru, Masai, was reported by the 21-year-old victim several days later.

The man sustained injuries on his lips, left ear, and bruises to his body.

The case is being investigated for wrongful confinement and voluntarily causing hurt under Sections 342 and 323 of the Penal Code.

Authorities are also probing the suspects under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Sohaimi urged members of the public with information on the incident to contact investigating officer G Devandran at 014-6676431 or the Seri Alam police headquarters at 07-3864222.
