PETALING JAYA:
The policy requiring students to wear a Jalur Gemilang badge on their school uniforms will help prevent mistakes such as incorrect flag designs, women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri said.

In backing the policy, Nancy said many still took lightly the importance of respecting the Jalur Gemilang as Malaysian citizens, Bernama reported.

“These programmes aim to prevent mistakes such as incorrect flag designs, missing elements or improper ways of displaying the flag,” she was quoted as saying.

Nancy’s comments about incorrect flag designs come in the wake of recent gaffes involving the Jalur Gemilang.

On Saturday, a Singapore-based baby food vendor apologised after putting up a video showing the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon, the third such case within a week.

Last week, a Chinese language daily stirred controversy following an illustration on its front page, where it wrongly depicted the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon.

Sin Chew Daily has since apologised over the gaffe and suspended its chief editor and deputy chief sub-editor pending the outcome of investigations. Police are also investigating the incident.

Kwong Wah Yit Poh is also being investigated over a Facebook post purportedly showing the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon.

In March, it was reported that public school students will have to wear a Jalur Gemilang badge on their school uniforms, beginning today, following the Cabinet’s approval.

The rule applies to students in government schools, government-aided schools, matriculation colleges and teacher training institutes – with other educational institutions encouraged to adopt the practice.

Guidelines for wearing the badge stated that the policy is aimed at encouraging patriotism, fostering unity and showcasing national identity.

However, the education ministry said no disciplinary action will be taken against schoolchildren who fail to wear the Jalur Gemilang badge on their uniforms.
