PETALING JAYA:
Wisma Putra has confirmed there have been no changes to visa requirements and immigration policies for Malaysians travelling to or residing in the US.

This assurance comes amid reports of visa cancellations and deportations by the Donald Trump administration.

The ministry said these developments were not specifically targeted at Malaysians.

“Nevertheless, Malaysians who are currently in the US or planning to travel there are advised to stay updated on the latest entry, visa and immigration policies issued by the US authorities,” it said in a statement.

Wisma Putra also urged Malaysians in the US to comply with the local laws, immigration regulations and conditions of their respective visas, which are being enforced strictly at present.

“Should they have any queries or require consular support, they are encouraged to contact the nearest Malaysian diplomatic mission.

“The ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates should there be any changes affecting Malaysian citizens,” it added.

The ministry encouraged all travellers to consult official sources for verified information and to exercise due diligence when planning their travel or stay abroad.

Several reported cases illustrate the recent wave of US visa cancellations and deportations primarily targeting international students under the Trump administration’s second term.

Al Jazeera yesterday reported that hundreds of foreign students and recent graduates have seen their visas revoked by immigration officials since Trump took office, with several also arrested.

Many of the targets of the visa revocations and arrests are students who participated in pro-Palestine protests which erupted on campuses across the country in 2024 amid the war on Gaza.

Others are individuals with more indirect links to Palestine – or those who have shown support for Gaza on social media.

Some foreigners have had their visas removed after minor legal infractions, including a speeding ticket or other traffic violations.

Late last month, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said the administration had revoked the visas of at least 300 foreign students as part of efforts to clamp down on pro-Palestinian protesters on university campuses.
