NUTP calls for guidelines on festive celebrations at schools

NUTP president Aminuddin Awang says some large-scale Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations burden teachers and distract them from their core role as educators.

PETALING JAYA:
The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has urged the education ministry to issue official guidelines for festive celebrations at schools, especially for large-scale events.

NUTP president Aminuddin Awang said some schools hosted elaborate Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, even inviting administrators from nearby schools as well as officers from state education departments and district education offices.

“Even though such large-scale events happen only once a year, it cannot be denied that they add to teachers’ workload in ways unrelated to their professional duties,” he told FMT.

“While these events can foster unity, excessive celebrations inevitably place a burden on teachers.”

He suggested that school celebrations be held internally, without the need to invite senior officers from the state education department, district education office, or administrators from other schools.

“What’s important is that the objectives of the celebration – for students to appreciate the significance of the Islamic holy month, embrace forgiveness, and strengthen unity – are met,” said Aminuddin.

“This can be done without organising extravagant events that burden the teachers.”

FMT previously reported an academic’s call for the education ministry to issue formal guidelines on Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations at schools to prevent them from becoming burdensome to teachers.

Anuar Ahmad of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia raised the issue after receiving complaints from teachers who felt overwhelmed by large-scale celebrations that disrupted their focus on teaching.

The ministry responded by stating that Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations at schools should not burden teachers, students, or the broader school community.

Education director-general Azman Adnan said that while schools were allowed to plan festive activities, they should consider the core responsibilities of educators and the unique environment of each school.

He said headmasters and principals had the autonomy to decide on such matters based on their schools’ circumstances and suitability.

The issue also sparked discussion among educators and netizens, who said such activities should be more balanced and aligned with teachers’ primary role as educators.
