DAP MP, activist freed on police bail

Chow Yu Hui and Samka chairman Wilson Chang were released at 11.30am.

Raub MP Chow Yu Hui and an activist were arrested yesterday for allegedly obstructing public servants during an operation at a durian farm in Pahang.
PETALING JAYA:
Raub MP Chow Yu Hui and an activist have been released on police bail, a day after their arrest for allegedly obstructing public servants during an operation at a durian farm in Pahang.

The Save Musang King Alliance (Samka) said Chow and Samka chairman Wilson Chang were released at 11.30am.

The group contended that the pair had not committed any wrongdoing but were merely “standing with the very people who built Raub’s durian legacy”.

“Our arrests were never about the law. They were about silencing the voices of Raub’s landless farmers, who have toiled for decades to earn a livelihood,” Chow claimed.

He also called for an immediate halt to the felling of durian trees on the farm.

Meanwhile, Chang said he and the Raub MP cooperated fully with the cops and that they were treated respectfully during their time in the Raub police headquarters’ lock-up.

“We are always ready to talk. But we will not bow. We will not be trampled on. Cooperation must be built on fairness and mutual respect, not threats and chainsaws,” he said.

Media reports previously said that farmers had blocked access routes and displayed banners to express their dissatisfaction after enforcement personnel destroyed their decades-old crops.

The Pahang government denied violating a court order in felling around 200 Musang King durian trees during the enforcement operation in Sungai Klau, Raub, on April 8.

Following Chow and Chang’s arrest, Pahang police chief Yahaya Othman said a remand order might not be sought if the investigation could be completed within the day.
