PUTRAJAYA:
A director-general in charge of the government’s witness protection programme is seeking to set aside a subpoena requiring him to testify in Najib Razak’s 1MDB trial.

Senior federal counsel Nur Hidayah Raihan Nasir, appearing for the protection division of the Prime Minister’s Department, told the High Court here that the subpoena served on the officer yesterday did not specify why his attendance in court was required.

“I spoke to the defence team and they informed me that they wanted to ask the witness about (ex-banker) Roger Ng.

“We believe this subpoena should be set aside because the director-general is bound by secrecy and cannot disclose anything as regards witness protection, be it about Ng or anyone,” said Hidayah.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah then ordered Hidayah to file the setting aside application by Friday.

“I will hear you on Tuesday (April 15),” he added.

Lawyer Shafee Abdullah asked for a copy of the application to be served on the defence on the day it is filed.

Previously, the court was informed that Najib’s lawyers wanted to interview Ng in connection with the former prime minister’s defence to the charges preferred against him.

Najib is standing trial on 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering over funds amounting to RM2.28 billion deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.
