2 privates charged with murder of soldier at Miri camp

The magistrates’ court in Miri ordered both accused to remain in detention pending their next appearance in court.
PETALING JAYA:
Two privates were charged in the magistrates’ court in Miri, Sarawak, today with the murder of a colleague at a military camp last month.

Afiq Syarim, 23, from Bedong, Kedah, and Faies Khuzaimah, 21, from Tumpat, Kelantan, were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code, with killing Muqriz Aseri, 21.

According to the charge sheet, the two were accused of jointly causing Muqriz’s death between 2.15am and 3.05am on March 24, Berita Harian reported.

They were accused of committing the offence in a room at Bujang LLP Residential Block, Kompeni Alpa, 20th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment at Kem Sri Miri, Sarawak.

Both accused nodded after the charges were read before magistrate Ashok Linggam. However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Deputy public prosecutor Franklin Ganggan Bennet requested a date for mention of the case while awaiting the victim’s autopsy and chemical reports.

The magistrate granted the request and set May 30 for case mention.

Both accused were ordered to remain in detention pending the next court date.

Faies was represented by lawyer Ranbir Singh, while the first accused had no legal counsel.
