He said that the amount of damage could have been more, around RM285 million, had it not been for the swift response of the fire and rescue department.
“The damage to public infrastructure and surrounding areas is still under assessment,” Amirudin said at a press conference here.
Amirudin said the final tally conducted by the authorities found that 437 houses were located in the affected area.
He said 81 were categorised as completely destroyed (with structural damage exceeding 40%), 81 as partially destroyed (with structural damage of less than 40%), and 57 as affected but did not suffer any structural impact, while the remaining 218 were not affected.
Amirudin also said 613 households were affected by the fire, based on the registration of victims, which ended yesterday.
Petronas, govt offer additional aid
Amirudin also announced that victims who had their homes destroyed would receive an additional RM5,000 each from Petronas.
He said the total aid for this category would be RM10,000 after including the RM5,000 aid previously announced by the federal government.
The owners and renters whose homes were partially damaged would receive RM2,500.
“We will contact the victims individually to verify their details and disburse the funds.”
Separately, Amirudin said the state government will provide each household RM2,000 for up to six months to cover their rental while they wait to relocate or for their homes to be repaired before moving back in.
He said victims who had previously opted out of a federal government initiative to be relocated to a temporary home would also be eligible for the aid.
“The state government is expected to fork out nearly RM7.4 million to cover all 613 affected households.”
Amirudin said the government would set up a website to streamline the available assistance programme and cash aid for victims.
“The victims can use the website to register for the assistance programme, while officers can use it to track the donations that have been given out.”
Additionally, Menteri Besar Selangor Inc will provide up to RM500 in cash aid to 265 students to purchase basic necessities destroyed in the fire.
Amirudin also said 28 students staying at temporary shelters went to school this morning using the free transport provided by the government and Prasarana Sdn Bhd.
“We found out that only 20% of the students in the morning session living at the shelters went to school today.
“We think some of them may still be traumatised. The state education department will send officers to help in the transition back to school.”
