PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia will consider a request to open a field hospital in Myanmar to take better care of those injured in the disastrous March 28 earthquake.

Defence minister Khaled Nordin said this will be brought to the Cabinet’s attention for consideration, Bernama reported.

“As Asean chairman, Malaysia is taking the opportunity to coordinate the assistance that needs to be provided to Myanmar,” he said after an Aidilfitri function hosted by his parliamentary constituency in Kota Tinggi.

The quake has claimed the lives of 3,514 people, with thousands of others injured and 210 reported missing.

Most of the deaths were in Mandalay, where 2,100 were killed. About 80% of the infrastructure in Sagaing city has been destroyed.

Relief efforts have been hampered by heavy rainfall, frequent aftershocks and internet outages that make coordination difficult.

Mass cremations are being carried out in open areas as the morgues are overwhelmed.
